I have carved this as a contemporary form of a Katchina from a piece of New Mexico Cedar Fence Post, leaving a portion of the post as a base.
The Hopi tribe has an art form of Katchina dolls. These figures when carved from cottonwood tree roots by Native Americans represent deities from the underworld of their religion. The cottonwood root represents the constant reliance on water from the earth to their crops in a harsh environment. I make no attempt to duplicate these religious objects, but follow the concept into more contemporary art piece.
