This was my first flower, but not my first power carving. The petals were about as thick as a potato chip, I used a small flashlight to shine through the petals, when I could see the light through them I knew they were thin enough. I spent as much time painting it as I did carving it. It took at least 50 coats of Purple & Violet washes to get the color the way I wanted it. If I can help when you get started, just give me a shout.
It was a Wanda Marsh class in Lake of the Ozarks Mo. Her husban is ill, so I'm not sure if she still travels much. I know that she still teaches in Old Spring Texas at the Old Texas Woodcarvers Shop. www.texaswoodcarvers.com She has a book out covering a Rose, a Hibiscus & a Morning Glory "Carving Realistic Flowers in Wood". She warned me when I picked out the Iris that I couldn't finish it in the 2 & 1/2 day class, she was right but I was farr enough along that I could finish it at home.
