Winter semester 2005, Bill Hurr taught an evening class on bark houses. Bark & tools were provided for the 5 week class for $35. Trudy Ginest assisted. The 1st house was a struggle. I bought a piece of bark - I purchased a set of chisels to rough out the piece, a couple Flexcut knives and an inexpensive 5 piece carving set. I completed that piece and Trudy’s comment made me smile then and now at the memory. “You’re a natural at this girl! You’ve got whimsy!”.

I enjoy bark carving. I did not realize I liked the softness of the wood until one day Trudy said they had a carver coming from out of town to teach a class, Keith Morrill, and I said I'd like to learn charicature carving. She said she'd get me up to speed enough to take the class. We made a study stick - 2x2x12 basswood. I had blisters on my hands. The next night as I sat in pain, after work, I wrote "Bully in the Block". (See journal entry - My 1st experience with basswood.)

I also took a class with Jon Nelson. We carved (he and I) a Santa. When Keith came back in the fall of 2006 I again took his class & tried my hand at a Santa cowboy - but, both hands were in braces and I was in lots of pain. Finished him in '09 - not a santa but the cowboy for my dad pictured here.
Though I lost my ability to carve, I did not loose my ability to pruchase roughouts. Between Jon Nelson, Keith, Bishops, Old Don and Doane, I was down right amazed when I started organizing and putting things away. I've somehow managed to compile SEVERAL YEARS worth.

EVERYTHING. I have GREAT teachers here in our carving club. I've been to Doane 3 different years - chip carving with Sheila Hunter,Darian Bebout & Wayne Gildseth. My cuts are just not concise. I have all the tools, I just lack the desire to sharpen well. I keep hoping my someday man will come along and just LONG TO SHARPEN knives, gouges, vtools..

The club carves every Tues. night during spring, summer and fall. They also carve year around on Thur. monings - I work!

I play a bit of guitar. My abilities are limited but, friends, family and even strangers at the nursing home enjoy listening to me sing and play. My 101yr old grandmother is in the nursing home here, so I have an added incentive.

At this point, I owe so many carvings, I don't know if I'll ever again get to carve for money!

You did a great job on your bark treehouse.  you are the only one who can see what's in your mind as you work to get it out.  I agree with you on your bark solution of simpler.  They will love it.

yes you do.  The top of the stick is a carved threaded needle.. and there are various quilt patterns on the stick.  I made two plastic templates and drew the squares randomly on the stick.  I then spent hours going through my quilt books - (something I will eventually do so.. had to have the books!) picking out patterns.  I penciled them on then V tooled them off.  I used paint pencils and colored pencils to fill in the patterns.. picking colors to use for the blocks was also a chore.  A few quilter friends said they liked the choices and of course.. a mom will always say she likes it so, it was nice to have other input.  Did you chip carve your patterns into the columns or just outline them?

ok.. Trudy told me.. it's Aspen.. boy was I off!

I have only carved one walking stick - The wood was Oak ( a branch from a tree in our back yard)

Do I recognize quilting patterns on the walking stick?  My wife is a quilter so when we redid the basement of our house I carved quilt patterns into a couple of the stair columns...it was a fun project.

Thank you for the kind comments on my carvings.

I very much enjoyed looking at the pictures of your carvings.  Of particular interest was your walking sticks.  What wood did you use?
